A companion volume to Handbook of Latin American Literature , this Spanish-language anthology contains selections by 45 Spanish-American authors, and is intended as a text for an upper division Latin American literature survey course. Emphasis is on major 20th-century writers, while important works from colonial and 19th-century literature are also included. There are numerous selections by women as well as two complete novels and two complete dramatic texts (Azuela and Garcfa Marquez; Ssnchez and Castellanos. There is the complete text of a slave narrative (Manzao) and chapters from Nobel Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu's testimonial narrative. The anthology assumes considerable command of Spanish, and contains footnotes to allusions and cultural references, as well as to words and phrases not found in standard bilingual dictionaries used in the US.
