This text evolved from an October 2000 conference on education, labor and emancipation, held at Florida International University in Miami, in which students and scholars convened for the purpose of "extending and perpetuating the legacy of Paulo Freire." Twenty-three selected participants were asked to extend their conversation and share their work in this text. Fifteen essays are grouped into three sections: personal narratives describing how Freire touched the lives of those he knew and loved, theoretical applications of Freire's message, and applications of his oppressor-oppressed contradictions in various disciplines and locations.
