Focusing on Indonesia as an illustrative case study, Tan (National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological U., Singapore) explores indoctrination in the context of Islamic education. She argues that an indoctrinatory tradition is one that seeks to implant "control beliefs" that result in ideological totalism. She offers examples, such as the Islamic school co-founded by Abu Bakar Ba'asyir and the organization Jemaah Islamiyah, as an illustration of the processes by which these control beliefs are implanted in Islamic education and proposes methods for creating and promoting educative Muslim traditions that foster religious pluralism, strong rationality, and strong autonomy; offering examples here as well. Charlene Tan is an associate professor at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She has held visiting appointments at the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta; the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies; and the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre of Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge.
