Textiles from the Andes

For the ancient peoples of the Andes, textiles were often the most valuable commodity they possessed - far beyond gold and silver. For us, they are works of unsurpassed art and craftsmanship, and one of the greatest resources for understanding these mysterious civilizations. This book focuses on over thirty pieces from the British Museum's fine collection of Peruvian and other early Andean textiles. Included are rare and exquisite examples, many of great importance, ranging in date from the Paracas to the Inka and Colonial periods, 200 BC to the late eighteenth century AD.

The introduction sets these wonderful textiles within their historical, cultural and environmental context and explains their significant role in reflecting and often affecting political and religious beliefs. Materials and techniques are also discussed and further explained in a glossary. Specially commissioned detailed photographs highlight the striking patterns, motifs and colours that continue to inspire both the region's weavers today and design enthusiasts throughout the world.

Penelope Dransart is Reader in Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Wales, Lampeter. She has done fieldwork among Aymara-speaking herders of llamas and alpacas in the highlands of northern Chile.
Helen Wolfe is the Textile Collections Manager at the British Museum. She has presented seminars and workshops on ethnographic textiles, both at the British Museum and abroad.
