商品簡介
The Iguvine Tables, seven pre-Roman bronze tablets found in Italy in the 15th century, contain rites and sacral laws of the Fratres Atiedii, a priestly brotherhood in ancient Italy. Tablets III and IV are the topic of this study by Weiss (linguistics, Cornell U.), who undertakes a painstaking examination of the tablets' language, recreating the ritual that they describe. The volume, which is directed mainly at linguists and specialists of ancient Italy, describes the specifics of the language of these two tablets, with discussion of the origin and meaning of each word and its forms. Of broader interest, however, is the concluding chapter, presenting a side-by-side translation into English of Tables III-IV with the original text, followed by a commentary on the ritual they describe. The introduction includes a lengthy discussion and reaction to the work of John B. Wilkins concerning the linguistic implications of the tablets. An exhaustive bibliography is provided.
