Kilpatrick (Italian, U. of Georgia) examines consonant clusters and their propagation through northern Italian dialects including Piemontese, Piacentino, Genovese, Milanese, Bolognese and Standard Italian. Combining previously unrelated theories into a single theory, the work is divided into sections addressing characteristics of northern dialects, metathesis, epenthesis, deletion and frequency. Written for serious scholars of romance languages or linguistics, methods used to provide analysis include application of optimality theory and frequency effects.
