Assuming only the mathematical level typical to the first year of graduate school, Hindman (Howard U.) and Strauss (Leeds U.) develop the basic background information about compact right topological semigroups, the Stone-Cech compactification of a discrete space, and the extension of the semigroup operation on S to beta S. Then they explore some applications of the algebra to the part of combinatorics known as Ramsey Theory and demonstrate its connections with topological dynamics, ergodic theory, and the general theory of semigroup compactifications. The first edition was published in 1998, and the second reflects the considerable research since then by adding 50 new lemmas and theorems to the text and 165 new papers to the bibliography.
