商品簡介
This reference for media students is informed by Raymond Williams' Keywords (1976, 1983). Jones (U. of New South Wales) and Holmes (Monash U.) see keywords as fault lines between the continental plates of fully fledged theories. Seeking to strike a balance between old and new concepts as well as old and new media, the authors have chosen 45 words central to the field of media and communications studies, especially words that are useful entry points for discussion because of their contested status. For each word, a 4-8 page essay provides an account of the meanings, sources, role, and influence of the term. Coverage encompasses traditional topics such as capitalism, audience, broadcasting, and image, as well as new terms such as mobile privatization, technoculture, globalization, and cyberculture. There are also entries on critical and analytical issues, such as genre, criticism, postmodernism, deconstruction, sign, and embodiment. Essays include cross references and further print and online reading suggestions. Many entries include b&w summary charts. Annotation c2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
