商品簡介
This book collects papers presented at the fifth Diatribai international conference on Hellenistic, Imperial, and Late Ancient philosophy, held in Europe. For this reason, three of the thirteen essays are in French, and one is in German. The remainder are in English. Quotations from the ancient Greek are rendered in Greek characters, generally without translation or transliteration. All the essays treat the idea and practice of contemplative life in Greek-influenced thinkers after Plato and Aristotle. The book begins with an overview of the idea from the presocratics to the end of antiquity. The rest of the book is divided into three sections on Hellenistic and post-Hellenistic debate, early Imperial and Neoplatonist thought, and Christian reception of Greco-Roman ideas of contemplative life. The authors generally write in clear and skillful prose; however, detailed classical background is assumed for readers of this volume, and it is most appropriate for multilingual readers who have done serious scholarship in classical philosophy.
