The articles of this Festschrift are based on talks presented at a conference convened in Luscombe's honor in Sheffield in September 2006. A central theme is the content and controversies concerning learning and texts in medieval universities and monasteries. Individual topics include uses of verse from the Book of Daniel to transgress authority, by Robert E. Lerner; contemporary critique of the writing of Roger Bacon, by Amanda Power; Jean Gerson and scholasticism, by Brian Patrick McGuire; and an overview of wisdom as a representation of power in the careers of Henry of Ghent, Meister Eckhart, Thomas Aquinas, and others, by Andreas Speer. (The contributors' affiliations are not noted.) One of the 14 essays is in German. An introductory appreciation of Luscombe (by Christopher Brooke) and a full list of Luscombe's publications fill out this handsome tribute. 作者簡介
Joseph Canning, Ph.D. (1974) in History, University of Cambridge, was formerly Reader in History at Bangor University, and is now Affiliated Lecturer in History at Cambridge University. He has published extensively in medieval political thought.Edmund King, Ph.D. (1968), in History, University of Cambridge, is Emeritus Professor of Medieval History at the University of Sheffield, His publications on the social and political history of medieval Britain include most recently King Stephen in the Yale English Monarchs Series (2010). Martial Staub, Ph.D. (1997), University of Paris X - Nanterre, is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Sheffield. He specialises in the history of the Church and urban societies in Late Medieval and Renaissance Europe and has edited i>Enzyklopadie des Mittelalters, 2 vols. (Darmstadt, 2008).
