Meteorological satellites have been flown in near-Earth orbit since the 1960s. Explaining that the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) in 1979 became the first truly operational cloud imaging instrument to view the Earth-atmosphere system in a large number of discrete wavelengths, Hutchinson (U. of Texas at Austin) and Cracknell (U. of Dundee, UK) introduce the wealth of data generated by more recent US government-sponsored satellite programs. They also note that the latest generation of electro-optical imagers are due to be launched. Parts of the text are aimed at those familiar with calculus, while the many examples should enlighten even those with a less extensive mathematical background on the basic concepts and interpretation of multi-spectral imagery.
