The text explores the roles black Minnesotans had as slaves and free men and women and as residents of Fort Snelling, of missions, of Indian communities, and of an early St. Paul evolving from a French-speaking settlement into an American city, and the impact of interracial relationships and the views of others on the formation of a black person's self-identity.
