In a popular weekly periodical called The Loiterer, James Austen (Jane's elder brother) described his daily life as a student at Oxford. The series also featured contributions from his younger brother Henry and other friends and academic colleagues. The 60 installments were gathered together and published by the Austen Family in 1790. This volume reproduces the essays as they appeared in that two-volume work. A number of detailed explanatory notes are found at the back. Editor Mack (U. of Exeter) also provides an extensive critical introduction. Annotation c2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
