In what could be called an encyclopedia of rhetoricians, forty-three academics in English, rhetoric, and composition write 5-15 page entries on 40 thinkers including Bakhtin, Barthes, Booth, Cixous, de Man, Derrida, Peter Elbow, Foucault, Habermas, Lyotard, Ong, I.A. Richards, and Stephen Toulmin (as can be seen by this array, these thinkers are not often thought of as rhetoricians, but might better be characterized as language theorists or language philosophers). Each essay offers a brief biography, an analysis of the person's theories, and a bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The introduction organizes the state of rhetoric at the end of the 20th century into categories termed current-traditional, expressive, cognitive, a reclamation of the classical tradition, social-epistemic, poststructuralist and postmodern, and electronic and computer-assisted. 作者簡介

MICHAEL G. MORAN is Associate Professor of English at the University of Georgia. His previous books includeResearch in Composition and Rhetoric (1984), Research in Technical Communication (1985),Research in Basic Writing (1990), and Eighteenth-Century British and American Rhetorics and Rhetoricians (1994), all available from Greenwood Press.

MICHELLE BALLIF is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Georgia. She is the coeditor ofRealms of Rhetoric (1991) and has published numerous articles.
