Shaping the Campus Conversation on Student Learning and Experience ― Activating the Results of Assessment in Action

This volume describes the professional development program Assessment in Action, which ran from 2013 to 2016 and engaged about 200 higher education institutions to show evidence of library impact in advancing library leadership and evidence-based advocacy. It contains 18 chapters that describe the development of the program, the findings of the team-based assessment projects, program results, reflections about its impact, and recommendations for future directions. Results chapters describe evidence about library impact on student learning and success, the importance of a collaborative approach to assessment, and demonstrations of library leadership, while reflections chapters detail the ongoing effectiveness of the program and reflections by librarians who led campus projects in North America, observations by program facilitators about librarian learning and assessment work, recommendations for leveraging features of the program’s approach to collaborate with campus stakeholders, and consideration of the program within the context of the Association of College and Research Libraries' ongoing activities to build the profession’s capacity for assessment. The final section outlines contributions of the program to ACRL's Value of Academic Library Initiative and new directions for advancing academic library assessment. Appendices provide supporting material about the planning activities leading up to the implementation of the program, information about the participating institutions and program contributors, an overview of professional development project design elements, documents that recommend strategic directions for academic library assessment, reports to the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and publications and presentations related to the program.
