Italian food has long been a favorite of diners the world over. And while Rome has often suffered in the shadows of other gastronomic star cities like Naples or Sicily, its place on the world food map is no less important. Here, Karima Moyer-Nocchi explores the history and cultural significance of Rome’s food drink.

Karima Moyer-Nocchi has lived in Italy for 26 years, half of her life. She has held tenure at the University of Siena in the Modern Languages Department for 19 years. She has an MFA in Dramaturgy, a writing degree, and a MEd in Linguistics. Her lifelong interest in gastronomy, and culinary experience in Italy culminated in the publication of Chewing the Fat – An Oral History of Italian Foodways. Prof. Moyer-Nocchi is an active lecturer on the History of Italian Food. She has spoken at the Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery (On Food and Fascism: Plating up Oral History), the Umbra Institute’s Food Conference (Matriarch Mythbusters), Slow Food’s Tiferno Eat (Gli architetti delle tradizioni siamo noi) and is slated to speak at the Dublin Gastronomy Symposium in May of this year (Fascism and the Birth of Italian Cuisine); other future engagements include leading a weeklong workshop on the History of Italian Food at Middlebury College in Oakland, CA, as well as teaching a summer course entitled the History of Italian Food at the University of Oklahoma, Arezzo. She has a website in the works called Italianicity, which has not yet been launched.
