商品簡介

The Arch Lake human burial site in eastern New Mexico was discovered in 1967, yielding the third-oldest known remains in North America. Since its original excavation and removal to Eastern New Mexico University's Blackwater Draw Museum, the burial has been only locally known. In February 2000 an interdisciplinary team led by Douglas W Owsley reexamined the osteology, geology, archaeology, and radiocarbon dating of the burial. Arch Lake Woman presents the results of this recent analysis of the skeleton and site.

Studying the burial, which dating indicates as about 10,000 radiocarbon years old, the team noted unique morphological characteristics of the Arch Lake skeleton, found lying supine with cultural materials including talc beads, a probable bone tool, and dense red pigment associated with a unifacial stone tool. Cultural affiliation is tentative, but dating and geography of the site suggest Plainview as a possibility. The extended burial position represents a marked departure from the flexed position found at the Gordon Creek, Horn Shelter No. 2, and Wilson-Leonard sites.

In addition to color and black-and-white illustrations, Arch Lake Woman includes extensive tables describing the team's discoveries and comparing their results with those of other ancient burials.

As the first volume in Peopling of the Americas Publicationsureleased by Texas A&M University Press for the Center for the Study of the First AmericansuArch Lake Woman presents original research on one of the earliest burial sites found on the North American continent.
