Marranci (anthropology of Islam, U. of Western Sydney, Australia) rejects "ism" terms such as Islamic fundamentalism or Islamism in favor of "emotional Islam," by which he means that in the process of Islamic community formation, it is the dynamics of environment, autobiographical self, emotions, and identity that really matter. He proceeds to argue that this emotional Islam imbues ideas of justice with new values and can become an ideology of justice that is linked with an emotional ideology of tawhid (affirmation of the oneness of God) and that it is within this shift that the individual formation of emotional Islam becomes part of the group or movement. Finally, he argues that this emotional Islam is engaged in a competition for a hegemonic definition within "a clash of ethos and values in the form of an epistemological relationship: the 'civilised' and the 'civilisable'."
