Pole (1500-58) was a cardinal, archbishop of Canterbury, at the center of reform controversies, and antagonist of Henry VIII. His voluminous correspondence provides an important source for historians of the period but has not been systematically catalogued before. In the first three of four volumes, Mayer (history, Augustana College, Illinois) identifies, summarizes, and in some cases presents the text of his letters. Each entry also includes where it is located, where and when if it has ever been published, information about the physical document and the context of its production, and notes and comments on the text itself.
