How different is the world of deaf children aged seven to ten from that of their hearing peers? Sheridan (Social work, Gallaudet U.) examines the lives of those who are deaf or hard of hearing and in elementary school and follows up with the same subjects when they are between 13 and 17. The result is a collection of complex insights into the development of a range of levels of identification related to deafness, depending not only on the manner and form of education but local attitudes, family perceptions and encounters with deafness, and individual experience. Sheridan finds that many stereotypes do not apply to the childhood and adolescence of the youthful deaf. The interviews, presented as narratives, are fascinating indicators that the worlds of the deaf, and the Deaf, are more rich and complicated than even Sheridan's subjects yet know.
