During the two months Eric Hazan travels in the West Bank cities of Nablus, Qalqilya, and Hebron - a period of calm when "only" a half-dozen or so young men are killed - Hazan meets and talks with, among others, mothers, political leaders, business people, prisoners' families, a bookseller, a doctor, and a feminist activist.
Through Hazan's notes, we are transported to a little-known world; we glimpse what Palestinian family life is like, we see both election and "martyr" posters in the streets, we hear the local morning news on the radio, and we come to understand that the linear separation the term "the wall" suggests is neither straight nor straightforward.
From the surreal sight of an Israeli settler in a T-shirt jogging with the escort of an army jeep to the bitter description of the Oslo peace process by a former mayor of Nablus as a "pseudo-peace process that accelerated the colonization of the West Bank and intensified repression," Notes on the Occupation captures the day-to-day experiences of people from all walks of life living in the forty-year shadow of the occupation.
