China, Democracy, and Law

This collection offers a multifaceted, in-depth examination of democracy in the context of China's culture and history. Eighteen contributed chapters written by French scholars are arranged according to the following themes: tradition and reinvention, imperial institutions, the Late Empire and the Republic, 29th-century uses of the democratic idea, and the late 20th- and early 21st-century transitions. Editors Mireille Delmas-Marty and Pierre-Etienne Will are both affiliated with the College de France; Will (history of modern China) provides an introductory essay, and Marty (comparative legal studies and global law), the concluding essay. The papers arose from seminars held in 2002 and 2003, organized by the editors; they have been translated from French for this presentation. Mireille Delmas-Marty, has held the Chair of “Comparative legal studies and Internationalisation of Law” at the College de France since 2002. She has published extensively on Criminal Law, Human Rights Law, Comparative Law, Global Law and Theory of Law.Pierre-Etienne Will, has held the chair of History of Modern China at the College de France since 1992. He has published extensively on the social, political and economic history of late imperial and early Republican China.
