This work combines a biography of Captain Thomas Tingey, charged with building the Washington Navy Yard from the ground up in 1800, with background on the evolution of the shipyard. The book examines Tingey's role in the development of the US Navy, in the shipyard's activities, and in the growth of the city of Washington, DC. There is special focus on the events of 1814, when Tingey burned the shipyard to keep it from the British; he later rebuilt it. The book is illustrated with b&w historical illustrations.
