In 1949there were only 400, 000, 000 people in China, but the number has been rising eachyear since.There are many reasons for this. Genera.l health has been improving from year to year. Farmers have been producing more and more food and people have been eating better and better. For many years now, the leaders of the country have been asking people to have only one child. But this policy has only been working well in the cities. Families in the countryside have still been producing three or four children. And because of betterhealth, fewer children die at birth.
China's population has always been the largest in the world. The govemment and scientists have been working on an answer to the problem for a number of years. Hopefully,some day they will be able to solve the problem. Sports
For many years, China has wanted to be a great sporting nation. Her people have hoped for international success in badminton, volleyball, table tennis and swimming and recently their teams have been winning many competitions.
At one time, the most popular and successful sport in China was table tennis. How-ever, in the last ten years, table tennis has slowly been giving way to other sports, suchas volleyball, badminton and swimming. They are now just as popular.
