Bank Regulatory Reforms in Africa

Bank regulation in Africa is at a crossroads. The transition from Basel I to Basel II was relatively smooth, although there were many a 'doubting Thomas' on the feasibility of Basel II banking regulatory codes. With the global financial crisis and the collapse of Basel II, the new financial regulatory architecture is anchored on Basel III. Bank regulators in Africa, and commercial bankers in the continent, are worried about many features of Basel III but their voices seem to be in the wilderness. This book highlights the issues that have characterized the landscape of transition in bank regulation in Africa. Old hopes dashed, but some new hopes have emerged, alongside new challenges.

VICTOR MURINDE is Director of the African Development Institute at the African Development Bank, and Professor of Development Finance at the University of Birmingham, UK. He has contributed over 100 articles to journals and over 12 books, during the last 20 years, across all the mainstream areas of Economics and Finance. His current research is on Bank Regulation and Performance, involving colleagues at the African Development Bank, African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and Brookings Institution.
