Focusing on the implications, challenges, and lessons learned from increased student diversity in higher education around the world, Allen (higher education, U. of California, Los Angeles) et al. bring together an international group of scholars in sociology, education, ethnology, journalism, and geography who consider problems in higher education related to recent global shifts: access for disadvantaged students and segregation by race, gender, culture, language, nationality, or immigration status, creating lower achievement for disadvantaged students. The 19 essays draw from surveys, institutional records, interview/focus groups, life histories, demography, and participant observation for case studies that examine the comparative experiences of underrepresented students in different countries and whether and how institutions experience difference, diversity, and inequality; build bridges over multiple social divisions; provide important learning opportunities through interaction and diverse communities; and use diversity to achieve student growth in cognitive, social, civil, and democratic skills and value orientations. They explore the interrelationships among politics, economics, and education related to diversity in higher education; relationships between higher education, diversity, and nation building; disparities in access and success; and practical and conceptual improvements to access, equity, and stratification.
