McCarty (education and anthropology, UCLA) examines the history of language planning and policy among Native Americans or First Nations peoples in North America. She explores the interplay between language practices at the micro and macro level, arguing that linguistic and cultural diversity is an enabling condition for individuals, families, communities and society. She shows that schools and educators have a strategic role to play in promoting the revitalization of native languages. She further argues that "alphabetic or print literacy is only one facet of what 'counts' as literate practice," which leads her to consider several other dimensions of literacy and cultural fluency. Teresa L. McCarty is the George F. Kneller Chair in Education and Anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Alice Wiley Snell Professor Emerita of Education Policy Studies at Arizona State University. An educational anthropologist and applied linguist, she has worked with Indigenous education programs throughout North America
