The Anglo - Saxon ChronicleThe Anglo - Saxon Chronicle may have been composed in response to Alfred's educational program. It is arguably the most important prose work to survive in Old English. It consists of a series of annalswhich relates the major events of Britain from the arrival of Julius Caesar in 60 BC to the end of KingStephen's reign in 1154. Only one of the manuscripts, known as the Peterborough Chronicle, extendsthe Chronicle into the twelfth century. Whatever the extent of King Alfred's own involvement in theChronicle, it is clear that England's identity as a Christian nation was an assumption underlying its production. The wars against the Danes, which grabbed so much of the chroniclers' attention, can be seenas presenting the perennial battle of Christians against pagans, and hence of good against evil.Because the Chronicle was compiled by many hands over three centuries from the late ninth untilthe twelfth, its style and its focus changed considerably. In the ninth century, its focus was King Alfredhis success in defeating the Danes. In the tenth century, the focus remained glorification of themilitary achievements of the descendants of King Alfred, the failures being understated. But at the endof the century, the emphasis was switched to the failures of the aristocracy to perform their duty in theof the realm. It may be observed that the Alfredian annals were recorded within Alfred's lifeges The Chronicle is one of the few prose texts of the Old English period that contain substantial passages uninfluenced by any Latin source. Most of the entries in the Chronicle were simply brief notices ofthe events of a given year, and there was usually little or no elaboration. Yet, especially in the lateryears, there were often extended narratives. Beginning in the mid - tenth century, certain poems of nationalist aims were interspersed among the annals, among which, the first and best is The Battle ofBrunanburh, the one that Alfred Lord Tennyson ever translated into modern English.
