Riding Costume in Egypt ─ Origin and Appearance

The workshop, part of a Coptic studies conference, deal with the historical context of the oriental riding costume, the history of Antinoopolis, original pieces in various collections, and representations of riding costume on monuments both in Egypt and within the Sasanian Empire. Seven of the 16 papers are in English. They consider the origin of Persian riding coats with sleeves and underarm openings, a green riding coat fragment in the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, gaiters from Antinoopolis in the Museum fur Byzantinishe Kunst in Berlin, radiocarbon dating two Sasanian coats and three post-Sasanian tapestries, and Heron's military costume in wall paintings from Roman period Karanis. Cacilia Fluck, Ph.D. (1991) in Philosophy, University of Munster, Germany, is independant collaborator of the Skulpturensammlung und Museum fur Byzantinische Kunst, Berlin. She has published on late antique and early christian archaeology, especially textiles, from Egypt.Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, Ph.D. (1989) in archaeological textiles, Manchester University, is a textile historian and director of the Stichting Textile Research Centre, Leiden, the Netherlands. She is particularly interested in Middle Eastern textiles and clothing.
