Originally published in 1986 (Dordrecht; Foris), this text by Nespor (linguistics, U. of Ferrara, Italy) and Vogel (linguistics, U. of Delaware) has been out of print for some time. The 2007 reprint makes this classic work available once again to linguistics students and researchers. The authors introduce all of the prosodic domains--syllable, foot, word, clitic group, phonological phrase, intonational phrase and utterance--and comments on the evidence in their favor from numerous languages. Also included are chapters on the phonology of poetic meter and on the experimental testing of the role of the prosodic constituents in the perception of ambiguous sentences. In a new foreword, the authors provide an overview of the variety of directions related to the original proposals of the text that have been taken by researchers over the past 20-plus years.
