In the summer of 1940 the fate of Britain hung in the balance as across the English Channel the Nazi hordes were massing, preparing to invade this green and pleasant land. That summer, Germany would suffer its first defeat in a desperate struggle that took place in the sky over southern England that became known as ‘The Battle of Britain’.
In order to invade the United Kingdom, the Germans would first have to gain control of the sky over the landing beaches, but their mighty armies were thwarted by a small group of air men numbering less than 3,000 that Winston Churchill famously referred to as ‘The Few’.
The battle lasted from 10 July to 31 October, during which time its tide ebbed and flowed, sometimes in favor of Fighter Command, the force defending Britain, often in favor of the Luftwaffe, the German air force. But by the end of October, having lost a huge numbers of aircraft and men, Adolf Hitler was left with no choice but to cancel the invasion. This would ultimately bring about his downfall in the West.

作者簡介
Henry Buckton is a social historian, and has published a large number of books on various historical subjects. His main area of expertise is the Second World War, particularly the Battle of Britain. Henry studied at the Somerset College of Arts and trained as a graphic designer, but in his working life serves in the Ministry of Defence Police and Guarding Agency (MDPGA). He lives in Meare, Somerset.
