Author Stephen Langford, a doctor in Australia’s Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), outlines the history of the RFDS and its work bringing medical care to people in remote Western Australia. Stories from his years of service highlight the importance of technological innovations in aviation and medical equipment, from spill-proof urine sample bottles to portable diagnostic ultrasound and other equipment designed to tolerate extreme temperatures and changes in altitude, which enabled the RFDS to reach and help more people. He describes emergency medical rescue actions as well as preventive care such as vaccines, and gives background on the education and training of pilots and medical personnel. Appendices offer a timeline, lists of aircraft types and bases, and a glossary. The book contains b&w photos of equipment, airplanes, helicopters, and rescue missions. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
