商品簡介

Development-caused forced displacement and involuntary resettlement is now one of the top problems on the international development agenda. Despite the expansion of policies on involuntary resettlement since the 1980s, the magnitude of development-caused displacement has exponentially increased, from ten million people displaced annually in the 1990s, to fifteen-twenty million during the 2000s, and all indications showing further acceleration during the current decade. Challenging the Prevailing Paradigm of Displacement and Resettlement challenges existing weak policies and dysfunctional practices, and proposes a robust set of solutions to practically and operationally improve the performance level of resettlement policies and tackle injustices and violations.

Bringing together world leading and internationally reputed scholars and emerging stars within the field, Challenging the Prevailing Paradigm of Displacement and Resettlement documents the growing set of injustices, abuses, and human rights violations experienced by people forcibly displaced; translating cutting edge research into concrete policy recommendations, legislation, and new approaches toward achieving effective and measurable change.

At a time when governments, development agencies and universities worldwide are urgently seeking solutions, Challenging the Prevailing Paradigm of Displacement and Resettlement: Risks, Impoverishment, Legacies, Solutions suggests a new paradigm that is inclusive of the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of resettlement and is grounded in the recognition and protection of human rights. An inspring and compelling guide to the field, this book will be of interest to development practitioners, students, and researchers of international development, sociology, political science and economics.
