Professor Patrick Wormald was an expert on legal matters in early medieval Europe, particularly Saxon and Frankish societies. His colleagues and students have prepared an excellent memorial to him in this volume. Many of the articles began as papers delivered at two 2006 symposia, one at the annual medieval congress in Kalamazoo, MI, and the other at St Hilda's College, Oxford. There are introductory articles on Wormald and his work, as well as his influence on the field. The papers follow Wormald's interests: Celtic and Anglo-Saxon civil structure, Pope Gregory the Great and the Venerable Bede, the intellectual world of the Carolingians, early English politics and law, and the interweaving of church and society in early England. Both the editors and the contributors are among the most respected experts in the field. They present an edition that scholars will treasure and Wormald would be proud of.
