Guazzone (history, U. of Rome, Italy) and Pioppi (Italian Institute of International Affairs, Italy) present 13 essays exploring political change in the Arab world through a focus on the restructuring of the state under conditions of neoliberal globalization. Case studies are used to test the hypothesis that state restructuring under neoliberalism has led to the emergence and gradual consolidation of a new model of authoritarian political regime in which the state increasingly represents the sum of the private interests of the members of the regime and is less and less accountable to its own citizens. This development is characterized by a fragmentation of the power structure, an increase in informal models of government such as neo-patrimonialism and corruption, and political and economic marginalization of large social sectors. The case studies look at Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia, each of which is discussed in terms of politics, economics, and security. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
