商品簡介

作者簡介

It was banned by the Pope but read openly in the French court. It made its writers very sought-after in the salon culture. Its writers were ambitious young men whose characters and personal circumstances made them dissatisfied with their status in a society dominated by the Crown and the Church, so they sought to demolish it. Arguably one of the most influential texts in French history, the Encylopedie made household names of Diderot, Rousseau, Voltaire and d'Alembert, if one's household could afford to wait 16 years for its completion and buy all 27 volumes. Journalist Blom explains why the content of the Encyclopedie , which included admiring comments on atheism and explicit illustrations of genitalia, could cause trouble with censors, and how its authors' powerful patrons allowed it to be published without their being executed.
