Medieval notions and representations of angels, on one hand, and the tools they used to dispel devils and evil spirits, on the other, are the basis for this collection of studies. Individual topics include apotropaic symbols on stoves to repel evil spirits, angels in Jewish manuscript art, interpretations of the biblical Enoch based on the Apocalypse of Enoch, depictions in prints of devils in the vicinity of people, and analysis of angels as guardians or avengers in altarpieces from Transylvania. The nine essays were contributed by scholars of medieval studies affiliated with universities in Hungary, Romania, Austria, Russia, and Germany and first presented at a 2007 workshop at Central European University, Budapest, where editor Gerhard Jaritz is affiliated.
