2.3.3 Relationship between semantic features and contextual factors
It has been shown that the knowledge of semantic features andthe sensitivity to contextual factors are of the same importance formastering English articles.Since both of them seem to be indispensable for correctly using English articles, what is the relationship between them?Is one of them more important than the other,or are theyequally important and closely related? How will they work togetherto influence the use of English articles? We can find that these questions have been partially addressed in section 2.3.1 through the discussion of the context-driven nature of semantic features, whichdemonstrates the effects of contextual factors on the computation ofthe value of semantic features. It can thus be firstly concluded that therelationship between semantic features and contextual factors is reflected in the function of contextual factors in the computation of semantic features of English articles.
Secondly, however,it should also be noted that while contextualfactors might contribute to the computation of semantic features, semantic features will determine the role of contextual factors in articleuses.Contextual factors do not contribute to article uses directly although we may find that sometimes language users' sensitivity tocontextual factors indeed seems to be able to lead them to make accurate article choices.Contexts are important just because they provide adomain for the determination of the value of semantic features ratherthan because they directly determine the use of English articles. It issemantic feature that works as a channel through which contextualfactors such as previous mention, association,or background knowledge can possibly be related to the use of English articles.
