醫學英語教程生物醫學：學生用書（簡體書）

《大學英語拓展課程系列·醫學英語教程：生物醫學（學生用書）（第2版）》從醫學英語教學實際出發，由醫科類院校專家和教師編寫。選文涵蓋生物醫學的各主要領域，語言地道，難度適中，并配有插圖和表格。每篇課文后設置多種練習，有的放矢地提高學生英語綜合運用能力。

本書的第一版是根據國家教育部對大學生提出的掌握專業英語的要求，在世紀之交編寫的，因此，書名為《新世紀醫學英語教程》（生物醫學）。十多年過去了，我們欣喜地看到，這本教材得到廣大師生的厚愛，仍有很強的生命力。為了進一步提升教材的質量，以期更好地為今日的師生服務，我們根據多年使用的實際情況，對《新世紀醫學英語教程》進行修訂。
我們在第一版的前言中指出，作為專業英語教材，首先應當與醫學教學的實際相結合。當前的醫學發展，盡管有著日新月異的變化，生物醫學仍然是醫學教學的主線。修訂后的教材更有代表性地涉及生物醫學的各個主要領域，從細胞、組織到人體系統，循序漸進，推進到當前醫學所特別關注的營養、微生物、腫瘤和遺傳等前沿陣地。為了兼顧學生繼續提高英語語言水平和熟悉醫學英語的雙重需要，兼顧對醫學知識的了解和閱讀專業文獻的不同要求，本書每個單元均包括一篇概述性的文章（ReadingA）和一篇專業性較強的文章（ReadingB）。前者以輕松、活潑的文體介紹一般的醫學內容，后者以嚴謹的科技語言論述具體的醫學問題，兩者之間構成一種內容一致、語言風格互相補充的關系。課文有一定長度，從閱讀量上保證提高閱讀能力的基本需要。為了便于課文內容的講授和理解，修訂本增加了一些插圖和表格，使教材更具親和力和時代感。
本書的練習安排突出在聽、說、讀、寫、譯等各個方面的全面要求：設有閱讀理解、詞匯運用、聽說互動及英漢互譯等練習項目；根據醫學英語詞匯的特點，專設構詞基礎這一項目，以使學生在詞匯方面有所突破。每個練習項目緊扣課文，既是對課文從內容到形式的復習，又是課文內容的有機延伸。比如，閱讀理解練習有選擇、是非、簡答等形式，有針對性而不繁瑣；詞匯運用部分所用例句均與醫學內容相關，為學生提供運用重點詞匯的范例；聽說互動以聽寫為基礎，材料由淺入深，要求從易到難為學生逐步掌握聽說能力打好基礎；英漢互譯突出對醫學英語常用語法結構的運用，這也是醫學英語寫作最基本、最實際的訓練。構詞基礎簡明扼要地介紹醫學英語構詞的基本規則，并提供最常用的詞素和實例。練習編寫考慮內容的實際用途，學生的實際水平，有的放矢，有根有據。
由于各醫學院校和師生的情況各不相同，我們建議使用本教材的教師根據具體情況對內容酌情選用。我們相信，經過十余年實踐的醫學英語教師完全有能力用好本書，為提高學生的醫學英語實際能力做出貢獻。盡管本書已經過修訂完善，我們仍然期待使用本書的教師和同學提出寶貴的意見和建議，使本書在編者和使用者的共同努力下不斷更新，處于時代的前列。

Medical experts hoped that improved diagnostic imaging instrumentation， such as computed tomographic （CT） scanning and magnetic resonance imaging （MRI）， would make possible more precise diagnoses for most backpain patients. This promise has been illusory. One important reason is that， as in the x-ray studies， alarming abnormalities are found in pain-free people.
Findings from various studies suggest that many red herrings confuse imaging interpretationand that at least for some， spine abnormalities are purely coincidental and do not cause pain. Moreover， even the best imaging tests fail to identify the simple muscle spasm or injured ligament probably responsible for pain in a substantial percentage of back patients. All this imaging perplexity caused one orthopedic surgeon to remark， "A diagnosis based on MRI in the absence of objective clinical findings may not be the cause of a patients pain， and an attempt at operative correction could be the first step toward disaster." In other words， the office examination is at least as important as the imaging test， and surgery for patients whose back pain is associated only with abnormal imaging results can be unnecessary if not down- right detrimental. Many physicians now advocate CT scans and MRI only for those patients who are already surgical candidates for other reasons.
Complicating the situation still further is the fact that most patients with acute low-back pain simply get better - and quickly. A study comparing treatment outcomes found no differences in functional recovery times among patients who saw chiropractors， family doctors or orthopedic surgeons. Cost， on the other hand， varied substantially， with family doctors costing least and surgeons most. The Hippocratic admonition "First， do no harm" may be the most important counsel with regard to this condition - the favorable natural history of acute low-back pain is hard to beat.
