Wading into the long debate over whether people's actions can be sufficiently explained neurologically without recourse to mind, Moore introduces two non-reductive approaches. The joint causation solution holds that the neural cause and the distinct mental cause jointly cause the physical effect. According to mereological emergentism, mental properties, as functional properties of higher level objects, determine lower level parts to realize specific roles in the system, which the lower level parts would not otherwise realize. Neither approach is new, he says, but his manner of working them out is different. Annotation c2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
