Highlighting the contradictions and disadvantages of creating written materials for a language that historically had no written language, this study charts the development of written indigenous language literacy tools and pedagogical materials at a tribal college in New Mexico, and discusses the tribal college’s eventual decision to return to oral-only language instruction in the Keiwa language. The author looks closely at the texts produced at the college, such as a Keiwa dictionary and orthography.
