Johnson (history, U. of Alabama at Huntsville) offers a distinctive counterbalance to previous scholarship, going beyond the scandals to analyze how the East German government used sports and sports spectatorship to attempt to build an identity for its citizens. She describes various levels of involvement, including active participation, loyal and fervent fandom, and complete avoidance. The result is a finely nuanced narrative about the conflicts that arose as athletes struggled in a planned and controlled society, and the themes of pseudo-militarism, social capitalism, and individuality. 作者簡介
Molly Wilkinson Johnson earned a Ph.D. in Modern European History from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 2003. She is an assistant professor of history at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
