Authors Barbara Cervone and Kathleen Cushman investigate the exceptions, telling the stories of five high schools with a national reputation for infusing rigorous academics with social and emotional learning, which results in demonstrable benefits for students.

Barbara Cervone is the founder and president of What Kids Can Do, Inc. and its nonprofit publishing arm, Next Generation Press.Kathleen Cushman is a writer who has specialized in education for more than two decades. Her work has appeared in Phi Delta Kappan, the Atlantic, the New Yorker, and many other national magazines.
