商品簡介
The Glossa Ordinaria a medieval compilation of biblical texts surrounded by commentaries on them by Church Fathers and medieval scholars, has long been taken for granted as a tool used throughout the High Middle Ages by students and masters alike. Smith (history, Harris Manchester College, Oxford, UK) revises the prevalent assumptions about the Gloss. The most common of these is that, after about 1170, the Gloss manuscripts are almost identical. Smith shows that there are significant differences among all known manuscripts. She establishes the probable inception of the Gloss with Anselm of Laon and traces the major revisions made in the twelfth century. She also goes over the ways in which some of the major medieval scholars viewed and used the Gloss. Most found it an essential tool is Biblical exegesis even though Robert of Meulan felt that there were some who fussed more about the presentation of the Gloss than the content of the text. Smith's scholarship will be appreciated by students of medieval intellectual history. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
