In order to understand the police report genre, its multiple readers, and contexts, Seawright conducted qualitative research for six years, using ethnographic field notes, interviews, observation, and discourse analysis. In addition to many informal conversations, she conducted formal interviews with 18 police officers from multiple agencies in three states, among them police trainers, supervisors, chiefs, and a sheriff. She covers writing for institutional memory and self-preservation; the creation and circulation of cultural and social capital; authority, agency, and the places of contested power; police reporting and public trust; and police procedure, the legal system, and the circulation of power.
