This work gathers 774 letters of Lu Qingsheng and Jiang Zhenyuan, an ordinary Chinese married couple who lived apart for 15 years, from 1961 to 1986. The letters shed light on everyday life, relationships, families, and the personal impact of politics at the height of Maoist socialism and in the early years of the post-Mao reform era. Presented in Chinese only, the letters (including those between the couple and those to and from their siblings, daughters, and other relatives) are grouped by writer and decade. A 35-page introduction sketches the lives of the couple, discusses the making and unmaking of socialist subjectivity during and immediately after the Maoist era, and considers the scholarly value of private letters for the study of social life in late 20th-century China. 作者簡介
Zhang Letian is Professor of Sociology and the founding director of the Center for Data and Research on Contemporary Social Life, the Development Institute at Fudan University. He is one of the pioneer Chinese scholars researching rural social life during the collectivization period and best known for his monograph on the rise and fall of the People’s Commune system.
Yunxiang Yan, Ph.D. (1993, Harvard), is Professor of Anthropology at University of California, Los Angeles. He has published three monographs, respectively, on gift-giving and social networks, transformation of private life, and individualization of society in China.
