This exploration begins with Character Sketches, a set of twelve lithographs done by Isaac Mendes Belisario (1794-1849) in 1838 on Jamaica, portraying merchants and craftsmen as well as the masquerades of slaves.
This book focuses on the presentation of gestures, the theatricality of objects and bodies in both staged settings and in everyday life. Artists Kutlug Ataman, Inaki Bonillas, Gerard Byrne, Jay Chung & Q Takeki Maeda, Rodney Graham, Hilary Lloyd, Kirsten Pieroth, and Susanne M. Winterling employ a variety of media to document the subtle and staged gestures that characterize identity and gender.
