0395A.ĐC

Published in conjunction with Vietnamese artist Ly Hoàng Ly’s first ever large-scale solo exhibition in her home country (co-organized by The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre and the artist; hosted at The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre, Ho Chi Minh City), ‘0395A.ĐC’ is a beautifully illustrated, 174-page color catalog presenting several select artworks spanning the different stages of Ly’s career - including painting, sculpture, photography, artist’s book, video art, performance art, installation, and a 21-ton steel public artwork. Undoubtedly the first to be manifested and exhibited publicly in Vietnam, Ly’s on-going project (started in 2011) and exhibition ‘0395A.ĐC’ chronicle the artist’s tireless inquiry into not only Vietnam’s turbulent history of displacement and migration, but also the global struggle of human (im)migration we all have to face today. Drawing on fragments of Vietnam’s (and other countries’) past tales of exodus, as well as her own experience as a modern-day migrant, Ly’s art attempts to give ‘voice’ to the absent and the made-absent; warning us of the contested nature of the making and remembering of history, whilst also creating a space to honour the millions of lives who similarly long for a home that exists, but is no longer possible to return to.

Produced in close collaboration with the artist herself, this definitive publication collects nearly ten years of Ly’s creative labour, including the artist’s own writing, notes and early sketches; photographic and literary reference and archival materials; technical drawings and photo documentation of the making of ‘boat home boat’ - Ly’s 21-ton steel public artwork, her most ambitious piece to date; and detail and installation photography of all artworks. This publication also features an essay by the curator of the exhibition Bill Nguyễn, an in-depth interview with the artist by media producer Fabiola Büchele and Bill Nguyễn, a note by documentary-maker and video artist Tirtza Even, and an afterward by Artistic Director of The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre Zoe Butt. All texts are bilingual, in both English and Vietnamese.

Ly Hoàng Ly (Nghệ sĩ / Artist)

Ly Hoàng Ly (sinh năm 1975 tại Hà Nội, hiện sinh sống tại TP.HCM) được biết đến bởi cộng đồng nghệ thuật trong nước và quốc tế như một trong những nghệ sĩ nổi bật nhất của thế hệ nghệ sĩ Việt Nam đồng trang lứa. Tốt nghiệp Đại học Mỹ thuật TP.HCM (năm 1999), cô được trao tặng học bổng Fulbright của Chính phủ Mỹ vào năm 2011 và hoàn thành bằng Thạc sỹ tại Học viện Mỹ thuật Chicago (SAIC, Mỹ) năm 2014. Tiếp cận nghệ thuật qua lăng kính liên kết đa ngành và đa phương pháp, qua thực hành của mình, Ly Hoàng Ly phản ánh và chất vấn những vấn đề toàn cầu: về sự dịch chuyển và những khoảng hổng trong căn tính và tâm lý, về tính thích ứng và khả năng chấp nhận, về sự chia rẽ và tính đoàn kết, và trên hết, về những gì khiến ta là-con-người.

Ly Hoàng Ly (born 1975 in Hanoi, now based in Ho Chi Minh City) is one of the most critically and internationally-acclaimed artists of her generation. Graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts in 1999, she received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2011, and earned her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago - SAIC in 2013. Approaching art in in a multidisciplinary manner and spanning across multiple media, her practice raises questions about the general human conditions, the critical states of society, and our shared issues of (mis)understandings and (mis)placement, of (trans)forming identity and being rootless, of adaptation and acceptance, of division and union, and of being human.

Ly Hoàng Ly has exhibited widely in and outside of Vietnam: 'Identities vs. Globalisation' (National Gallery, Bangkok; Chiang Mai University Art Museum, Thailand; and Dahlem Museum, Berlin, Germany, 2004), Busan Biennale 2002 (Busan, Korea), 'Transpop: Korea Vietnam Remix' (Arko Art Center, Seoul, Korea; Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, San Francisco, USA; and Sàn Art, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 2007), 'Connect: Art Scene Vietnam' (ifa Gallery, Berlin & Stuttgart, Germany, 2009), 'People vs. Space' (Richard Gray Gallery, Chicago, USA, 2012), 'Faithfully Flat' - in collaboration with Fields Medal winner Prof. Ngô Bảo Châu (Vietnam Institute for Advanced study in Mathematics, Hanoi, Vietnam; Joan Flasch Artist Books Collection, SAIC, Chicago; and North Branch Projects, Chicago, USA, 2014). In 2016, Ly Hoàng Ly participated in two of the most distinguished exhibitions of the year in Vietnam: 'Open door - Art through the 30 years of Renovation (1986-2016)' and 'Vietnam Eye' (Hanoi, Vietnam). In 2018, Ly participates in the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial Of Contemporary Art (APT9) at Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia.

Bill Nguyễn (Giám tuyển / Curator)

Bill Nguyễn (sinh năm 1988 tại Hà Nội, hiện sinh sống tại TP.HCM) là nghệ sĩ-giám tuyển quan tâm đến việc nghiên cứu và phát triển một hình thức và không gian thực hành khác, mang tính địa phương, cho công việc giám tuyển tại Việt Nam. Sau khi tốt nghiệp chuyên ngành Mỹ thuật tại Đại học Nottingham Trent (Vương quốc Anh), Bill tái nhập cộng đồng nghệ thuật địa phương dưới vai trò nghệ sĩ, giám tuyển và người làm giáo dục. Từ năm 2009 đến 2011, anh thiết kế các chương trình workshop giáo dục cho Hà Nội DOCLAB – Trung tâm Thực hành Phim tài liệu và Video thử nghiệm. Năm 2012, anh đồng dẫn dắt chương trình giáo dục liên ngành ARTLAB dành cho sinh viên và nghệ sĩ trẻ, tập trung vào giao thoa nghệ thuật với các lĩnh vực sáng tạo khác. Cùng năm, anh đồng sáng lập không gian nghệ thuật Manzi Art Space (Hà Nội), và bắt đầu hợp tác với Nhà Sàn Collective (Hà Nội) dưới vai trò giám tuyển khách mời. Bill đã tham gia khoá workshop cho giám tuyển trẻ thuộc Berlin Biennial lần thứ 8, và chương trình CuratorsLAB do Viện Goethe Đông Nam Á khởi xướng. Hiện tại, Bill là trợ lý giám tuyển tại Trung tâm Nghệ thuật Đương đại The Factory (TP.HCM).

Bill Nguyễn (born 1988 in Hanoi, now based in Ho Chi Minh City) is an artist-curator interested in researching and developing an alternative, locally-driven method and platform for curation in Vietnam. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Studio) from the School of Art and Design, Nottingham Trent University (UK), Bill returned to Hanoi in 2008, re-entering the scene through multiple trajectories in the art community: engaging as an artist, curator and educator. Between 2009 and 2011, he designed educational workshops for Hanoi DOCLAB – Centre for Experimental video and documentary filmmaking. In 2012, he co-led the education program ARTLAB focusing on cross-pollinating art and other creative fields for undergraduates and young artists. In the same year he co-founded Manzi Art Space (Hanoi), and started collaborating with Nhà Sàn Collective (Hanoi) as guest curator. Bill is an alumnus of the 8th Berlin Biennial Young Curators Workshop and a participating curator of the CuratorsLAB initiated by the Goethe Institut South East Asia; and is currently curatorial assistant at The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre (HCMC).
