The incidence of honor-related violence, primarily against women, is treated by an international group of scholars in law, sociology and religion. Idriss (law, Coventury University UK) and Abbas, of the Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies, set the parameters for the study. Domestic violence as part of a culture of honor, particularly in sexual matters, is the core topic. Articles focus primarily on Muslim families in and out of the Muslim diaspora but this is not the only society where such action has been condoned. The rise of honor-killings of Muslims in the UK is seen as a reaction to cultural dislocation and a resurgence of "traditional" Islam. While this is emblematic of a patriarchal society in which women are seen as property, many of the attacks are instigated by female family members or done with their support. The authors look at the role of police, lawmakers and the courts in stopping the practice. They also acknowledge that honor crimes will die a "hard death." While women's groups have taken up the cause, the authors point out that male-led groups who argue against violence are equally, if not more, important in changing attitudes. Anti-Islamic sentiment is part of the response to several well-publicized cases and one chapter elucidates the position of the Qu'ran on the subject.
