This volume stems from a 2007 symposium held in conjunction with an exhibition titled From Caspar David Friedrich to Gerhard Richter: German Paintings from Dresden. The exhibition was organized jointly by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles (where it was held), the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden, and the Atelier Gerhard Richter. Scholarship on Richter has taken a significant turn for a variety of reasons, among them the fact that the artist himself is making more documents available and is speaking more, there is increased access to archives and collections in the former East Germany, and there is a consensus (among the essayists presented here) that despite the artist's efforts to have his early works disregarded, they are indeed worthy of study. The three editors are art historians affiliated as follows: Christine Mehring (U. of Chicago), Jeanne Anne Nugent (independent scholar based in New York), and Jon L. Seydl (Cleveland Museum of Art). Christine Mehring is associate professor and the college director of graduate studies, Department of Art History, The University of Chicago. Jeanne Anne Nugent is an art historian and curator based in New York. Jon L. Seydl is the Paul J. and Edith Ingalls Vignos, Jr. Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, 1500–1800, at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
